SYLLABLE AND ACCENTUATION

 

A syllable means a unit of sound. A syllable may be a vowel or diphthong or more members joined to one or more consonants. 

 

A word may consist of a single syllable or many.

  • In polysyllabic words there is always a stressed syllable. Most English dictionaries indicate that syllable with an apostrophe-like mark which follows the tonic syllable.

  • Note that almost all English nouns (names) of two syllables carry stress on the first syllable.

  • Knowing where the stress falls is very important for words that can be used as a noun or verb or as. Typically, if the stress falls on the first syllable, the word is a noun. If the stress falls on the second syllable, is a verb.
